Have you ever been on vacation and the weather turned bad?  This is one reason as to why you should pack some board games for your vacation.  Another good reason is that gaming on vacation can help eliminate distractions from being at home.

When The Weather Is Against You

Bad Weather Good Time To Play Board Games
When the storms roll in, having some games handy can save the day!

It is that time of year again when many of us are packing our bags and heading to the beach, going camping or just travel in general.  While the car might already be pretty full, taking a few of the family favorite games along can be a very beneficial thing.

I remember as a kid we used to go to the beach for a week each year.  Often It would rain for one or two of those days and we would go try to find some inside entertainment.  The problem was though that everyone else was doing the same thing and it made it hard to find something to do.

By taking a couple games from your collection along, you now have another option on the table for those bad weather days.  You and your family can sit down in your own room and have fun together as a family.  Looking back to when I was a kid, I would have loved to have this option instead of standing in a huge line at the movies or the indoor mini golf park.

Free Of The Distractions From Home

At home there are often a lot of distractions that can deter you and your family from enjoying quality game time together.  From things like TV, Computers, Video Games, Friends, Pets and so much more, there can be many distractions left at home while you are on vacation.

I know personally there are many times I would love to sit down and play a game with the kids, but their friends stop by or they are already in the middle of something they don’t want to stop doing.  While we are away all those things go by the wayside and leave some ample time to sit down and have some fun together as a family.

Games Can Make Your Vacation More Affordable

Save Money With Board GamesAnother great reason to take some games along with you is that they can make your vacation a little more affordable.  I know personally it has been hard for my family and I to take vacations together over the last decade and that was in large part because of financial reasons.

Planning a game night while you are on vacation is a great way to avoid going out and spending money.  Let’s face it, if we are on vacation it tends to be in a more touristy area and the prices tend to be a little higher than normal.  By taking a night and staying in playing games together can definitely help reduce the overall cost of traveling.

Wrap Up

With all things considered, having a few games along can be very beneficial for you and your family as you travel.  They can help when the weather is bad and help save money, either way they are another positive option for your family.

  1. I fully agree. If you are headed on vacation and do not pack a few favorite board games you could be looking at a disaster. You new know when that weather is going to turn and you are all stuck inside with nothing to do. Boardgames are perfect for keeping kids entertained. Love the site!

    • Thanks much for your support on this concept Andre! I really appreciate it. I have been taking some board games with us when we visit our camp in the mountains and they have definitely helped there. We just planned our trip to the beach for this summer and one of my first thoughts was that we should pack a couple games that we all enjoy!

  2. Good post James,
I myself am a believer of having some games that are compact enough to take anywhere with you so when you do get into in-climate weather or some down time it is easy to keep yourself and those around you occupied while having some fun. I have a few dice games that usually do the trick; easy to carry, set up and play. They don’t take a lot of time and you can get a few games in easily depending on what else is on the agenda for the day.

    • There are many games that certainly do not take up a lot of space such as Dice games and let us not forget about at least having a deck of cards with us! In the end though as you said, having something along for that unexpected downtime is always a positive!

  3. i love the idea. recently i have been taking care of the grandchild. this is quite the different life then we have been doing lately. i have been introduced to cartoons i have never heard of, foods i have never seen and we have been playing board games a lot lately instead of watching tv.

    • Thanks much for sharing your story. Board games are definitely a lot more fun the watching TV and generally if given the option young kids will chose the game too! My kids went through a big Clue phase last year and more recently my daughter has been playing Monopoly while my youngest son has been enjoying Sentinels Of The Multiverse (which I will be doing a review for in the near future). If you ever need help finding a new game feel free to give me a shout and I will gladly help you out.
